Ice-chick!

As promised, my weblog will be in English this summer as it serves the role of an information board for my multinational friends scattered all over the world. I am back in Iceland.

Oh the joy of comfortably sit on the toilet without wondering if someone just tried to squat on it just before you entered, leaving shoe marks on the seat and used toilet paper in the bin next to the toilet.

The things back "home" that fill your heart of joy and comfort can be the littelest ones. Domestic fast food, driving (!!), horribly lame music, central heating, normal looking sheep, horrendously drunk people, ex's, midnight sun. You have got to love them, if only for the reason you know you will miss them in a few months time cuz I'm sure not staying.

Lets start with takeoff in Hong Kong.

Well, a bit before that actually. 13th of May, 2003 - my worst day in Hong Kong. 13th of May, 2004 - a close 2nd. Ridiculously stressful day resulted in a ruptured vain in brain from a huge fight with a camera sales man in Causeway Bay. Giving up on the locals and shouting vulgarities like a mad woman, I hurried to Airport Express for an early check in. "2810 HKD please for changing fee and exess baggage". !!!! !!!! I lost it again. Franticly started repacking and giving the check-in lady the evil eye (she didn´t seem to care at all). 2 kilos later I re-threw my bags on the thingy where you put your bags and got, with an attitude, my fee reduced to 1888HKD. Lord, I´m broke.

8.30pm and I´m alone in a bar in LKF, celebrating my own good-bye. Owen came to the rescue once a tear had formulated behind my contact lenses and bought me a drink (which were free by the way). Soon the bar was full of HSBC´s, Aberdeenies, vets and what not. Beaming with joy I received a farewell gift from the most lovable mates in the world, a rugby ball to practice my skills on in Iceland. I really had to remind myself over and over again that it IS the thought that counts once I found out that the ball was a basket ball!!! Unfortunately Icelanders don´t play rugby and therefore don´t sell rugby balls in shops. I am safe to assume that my rugby skills will not have improved dramatically by summer end. Sorry Joel.

Well, off to the airport in a big hurry, late as usual. Sweating and heart pounding I am one of the last ones to board and so happy to have two seats to myself. But no - a 157years old Chinese man with unnaturally long hairs from his moles and noodles in a bag, sinks in to the seat next to me. Hhhhrrrrggggkkkktttthhup! Spits in the puke bag! Great. 13 hours of that coming up. Lets count to ten shall we................or hundred.

Arrive in ever-foggy London and determined not to spend a dime in my 7 hours transit as I do not support British economy. Forced to though as I had to get from Heathrow to Stansted, a bus called National Express. My bag survived 13hours flight from Hong Kong to London, broke down in London. Who doesn´t? No refund or replaced bag, you entered the bus at your own risk (apparently my bags also, however completely unaware of that). Oh well, what is yet another disappointment in London??

Arrive safely in Iceland, checked in with two lovely guys from South Africa who happened to be traveling light….pure coincidence I’m sure . Gave them a lift into town with my friend Arna who kindly picked me up in Keflavik. Gave them a few tips on where to party in Iceland, only to find out a day later that most pubs have been replaced with others and they probably didn´t find any one of my recommended ones. Well, the best one they did find as I ran into them on Saturday night bouncing away in an all Icelandic Eurovision party, living it – loving it.

So here I am. Safe but freezing, slightly jet-lagged and a couple of pounds heavier. Think it must be the increased distance from the equator, gravity is pulling me harder and it affects the scales. Yup, sure of it.

More to come………

Ótrúlega gaman og jafnaðist næstum á við að hlusta á "Its my life" eftir nokkra vikna hlé. Hvert einasta hlaup fór eins og ég fyrirspáði og ég gekk út með seðlabúnt í vasanum. Montaði mig svo mikið að félagsskapurinn krafðist þess að ég blæddi á línuna á næsta bar.

Þá greip mig Óminnishegrinn og næsta sem ég veit er að ég ligg á sófanum heima með símtólið undir slefborinni kinninni, seðlabúntið horfið.

Gleðilegan fimmtudag.

Þreytandi spurningar

Eitt finnst mér alveg merkilegt. Hvernig er það hægt að fólk af mismunandi menningarstofni, þjóðerni, kyni og húðlit geti allir sem einn spurt sömu spurninga um landið mitt Ísland. Fyrsta spurning er ævinlega "is it very cold in Iceland?". Ok. Allt í lagi. Ég sætti mig við það. Ég byrja ekki að pirrast fyrir alvöru fyrr en óneitanlega síðar í öllum samræðum dúndra þeir þessari á mig: "How can you be cold?? You are from Iceland!!" Aaarg!

Áhorfendur glottu í laumi og hugsuðu ábyggilega "but she is from ICEland...?!?!?!"
